The full test index · Eczema

Every test for eczema, in one place.

A researcher’s view: the functional and conventional tests from all eight systems, collated. This is a derived index — each test lives on its system’s deep-dive page, and this page only rolls them up, so the two can never disagree.

Showing 2 tests across 2 of 8 systems for eczema. Findings are cited and graded A–D; some need more than one biomarker read together. Grades describe how strong the research is — never whether a result is good or bad for you. Nothing here is a diagnosis or medical advice.

Gut / Microbiome

Intestinal permeability panel

Functional / specialist

Gut barrier integrity and low-grade intestinal inflammation, via serum and stool markers, to gauge whether a 'leaky' barrier could be feeding the gut–skin axis.

  • Elevated serum zonulin has been associated with greater intestinal permeability and, in some atopic-dermatitis cohorts, with disease severity — supportive, not diagnostic.

    Biomarker · Zonulin

    Grade C abstract-level : Emerging — mechanistic / animal / in-vitro fixture-zonulin-atopic-dermatitis-2020
  • Zonulin elevated together with raised faecal calprotectin points to a barrier defect alongside active mucosal inflammation — a multi-biomarker pattern that is more informative than either marker alone for prioritising a gut-directed conversation in eczema.

Combination · Zonulin + Faecal calprotectin

    Grade D : Early — hypothesis / expert opinion fixture-permeability-inflammation-combo-2021

Skin Barrier

Skin barrier function assessment

Conventional or functional

How well the outer skin barrier holds water and resists colonisation — instrument-measured water loss, plus a filaggrin genotype and a skin-microbiology swab.

  • Higher transepidermal water loss reflects a weaker barrier and predicts greater eczema severity and flare risk — among the better-replicated barrier findings.

Biomarker · Transepidermal water loss (TEWL)

    Grade B : Solid — cohort / observational human fixture-tewl-eczema-severity-2018 , fixture-tewl-cohort-2019
  • A filaggrin loss-of-function variant carried alongside high Staphylococcus aureus skin colonisation marks a barrier-plus-colonisation phenotype that tends to track with more persistent disease — a multi-biomarker combination, hypothesis-level for now.

Combination · Filaggrin (FLG) loss-of-function variant + Staphylococcus aureus skin colonisation

    Grade D abstract-level : Early — hypothesis / expert opinion fixture-flg-staph-phenotype-2022
